Different Types of Car Servicing

Types of Car Servicing

A car service includes a series of inspections, parts replacements, and adjustments so that your car works as it should when you are on the road. You have to service your car as per the schedule to maintain the car’s warranty and skipping even one logbook service will void the warranty.

When you think about a service, it can be any type depending on the model of your car. It includes both major and minor services that have comprehensive inspections.

Not all things that are related to the car could come under the service. For instance, getting a roadworthy certificate doesn’t come under the car service.

There are different types of car services and let’s see some of them below:

  • Logbook service
The services that are scheduled under services when the car is under warranted can be called a logbook service. It specifies the level of service you should perform to your car at a fixed time and intervals. Technically, this might involve both minor and major services.

In this book, you can record information like details of the workshop and the kind of service that’s performed. In simpler terms, a logbook service has all the records of every service done to your car. Having a complete logbook will greatly increase the resale value of your car.

  • Major service
If your car has many major problems and involves services like the replacement of brake pads, repairing brake rotors, filling up engine coolant, changing engine oil and filter, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, fuel filters and air filter elements, then all these are called major services. You have to compulsorily replace these parts to maintain a car’s warranty and to provide safety to the car’s occupants.

  • Minor services
Don’t get the misconception that minor services can be ignored or you can postpone them. They may be minor but play an important role in your car’s maintenance. Services like regular inspections, and cleaning of things like lights, battery terminals, seat belts, spark plugs, etc., are some of the essential minor services you can perform to your car.

Other services that come under minor are inspection of the car’s bodywork for chipped paints and scratches, replacement of engine oil, testing of the HVAC system, inspection of fluid level and condition, drive belts, pulleys, and radiator hoses.

Depending on the minor, remember that not every service is listed under warranty. For instance, services like engine oil replacement and brake pad surveillance do not come under warranty. Check with your mechanic to know what services you can claim under warranty for your car.

  • Basic service
A basic service is carried out when there are no specific services left in a vehicle logbook. In this service, the mechanic will perform a comprehensive check majorly including engine oil and filter change.

The comprehensive inspection depends on the mechanic and it may differ from one person to another. There is no universal standard for a basic service. So, if you give your car for a service, always remember to mention the issues that you are facing.

In the basic service, when the mechanic completes the inspection, you will know the issues that are there in the car. Only after your approval, those issues will be resolved by the mechanic.

  • Interim car service - i.e. oil change
An interim car service like an oil change is a service that is only related to one single activity. If you want an oil change, the mechanic will change the engine oil and present your car to you without any further service or inspections. No additional service is done even if your car requires one.

  • Luxury car servicing for specific models
High-end car models need special servicing for which you can not consult a mechanic without proper research. You should only consult those who are proficient in luxury car servicing. As their design and build differ from normal cars, you should ensure to have only luxury car servicing.
