Kitchen Water Saving Tips

Kitchen water-saving tips

Do you know that by consciously using water in your home, you can get rid of the water shortage problem for future generations? It is estimated that if a person uses 50L less water every day, there won’t be any need to construct dams and reservoirs for storing water.

While you can’t keep calculating how much water you are using in your home, you can be conscious of how effectively you are using it. For instance, water usage is mostly done in the kitchen and bathroom and you can limit the usage by being alert of how much time you’re running the taps.

Today, we will discuss water-saving tips in your kitchen so that you can follow them when you are working in the kitchen. You will not only be taking a step towards sustainable living but you will also use less power for water pumping.

Only run the dishwasher when it’s full

The dishwater is one of the common electrical appliances in almost every Australian kitchen and is used once or twice a day. However, make sure to run the washer when it’s completely full. Though modern machines use water at the limit, it’s more effective to run the washer when it’s full.

Take advantage of water-saving functions like running the machine at ‘fast’ mode where it uses less water. And you don’t have to pre-rinse the dishes as the washer does it perfectly under ‘normal’ mode.

Do not leave the tap running

A lot of water is wasted during the preparation of cooking. While washing vegetables, fruits, and leafy vegetables, you may have the habit of leaving the tap running unnecessarily. Be mindful and always turn off the tap when you are not rinsing fruits or veggies.

Moreover, it’s always a good idea to take a bowl of water to soak and wash your produce. Instead of washing them directly below the tap, it’s better to take a water bowl and then wash them slowly and carefully.

Use water saving tap accessories

Does your kitchen have taps with only on and off options? It means that the water runs at either zero or maximum level. And it’s not always necessary to use water at a high level. So it’s important to use tap accessories such as flow restrictors and flow regulating valves. It lets you regulate water flow and allows you to limit water use. You can save a lot of water by turning on the water completely when there’s no need.

Install a hot water recirculation system

Using a hot water recirculation system is efficient if you want to save water. The taps that are a long way from the hot water system waste a lot of cold water before the system warms up the water.

Installing a hot water system will speed up the process of bringing hot water from the heater to the connected fixtures. In this way, you can save water when you want to use hot water.

Ensure appliances don’t have water leaks

A lot of water is wasted through leaks. What you think is just a drop will account for buckets of water loss if you don’t repair them immediately. Statistics show that nearly 30 – 200 litres of water are wasted every day through leaking taps. Check around your home and notice if any taps are leaking. Often, you can DIY repair the taps that have a loose connection.

While you’re at it, check if any appliances have water leaks like the dishwasher, washing machine, etc. If you want your machines to work longer and more efficiently, you have to service them properly at regular intervals. Ensure that there is no water loss happening through water machines.

Whether during kitchen renovations or constructing a new home, you have to ensure that the plumbing system is strong and durable. You will have fewer repairs and less water leakage in the future. You can save lots of water when you are sure that every tap in your house is sealed strong when turned off.

By being alert and mindful of the water you are using, you can ensure that a lot of water is saved for future generations.
