Fridge Moving Tips

Furniture Removal and Storage tips

The process of moving into a new residence, whether it be a house or an apartment, is not an easy one. Moving is already a major hassle, and it may become much worse if you want to bring any of your heavy appliances with you.

There is no foolproof method to make relocating a refrigerator easier. Appliances like refrigerators are not only expensive but also awkwardly shaped. Learning how to properly move a refrigerator is often essential to ensure a smooth relocation due to the high likelihood of damage and even serious injury that may occur if improper techniques are used. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, get an expert removalist on board to move your appliances.

  1. Switch off and disconnect
It's important to let a refrigerator's evaporator thaw before transferring it to prevent any damage. The oils and fluids in your refrigerator's compressor will settle and cease moving if you turn it off the night before. If your refrigerator includes an automated ice maker, you should empty the ice maker and unplug the water line before transferring the appliance.

  2. Clean and disinfect
Turning off the refrigerator is just the first step; afterwards comes emptying it and cleaning it thoroughly. As soon as you unplug the refrigerator, the temperature inside will begin to rise. Make an effort to clean it thoroughly if you want to enjoy a clean fridge in your new home because the smell of a warm, filthy fridge is really unpleasant.

  3. Remove interior shelves and pack them separately
To securely relocate a refrigerator or freezer, you need to take precautions to prevent any damage. Incorrectly assuming that the glass shelves of one's refrigerator will be intact during movement is a typical oversight. When you're ready to relocate the shelves, wrap them individually in packing paper or bubble wrap after cleaning and disinfecting them. If left inside, they may bounce around and break, necessitating the removal of all the glass and the purchase of new shelves as well as a lot of time and effort on your part.

  4. Secure the doors when moving
Lock the doors and wrap the unit in moving blankets to prevent any damage to it or your home on the move out.

A refrigerator is an expensive appliance. When relocating a refrigerator, it's important to use sturdy packing materials to prevent the appliance's inside and exterior from being damaged. For this, you'll need to cover your refrigerator twice with sturdy material. As a first line of defence, utilising expert packing wrap is crucial. After that, wrap the fridge in moving blankets and tape them in place. Packing tape can leave a sticky residue and lasting marks on the surface of your fridge, so avoid touching the two.

  5. Defrost freezer before moving
Next, defrost your refrigerator once you've cleaned it out. Turn it off and spread out towels to catch any dripping water from melting ice. While the freezer is defrosting, you may disinfect the inside of your refrigerator to stop the spread of germs. An effective and risk-free cleaning solution is one quart of hot water mixed with two teaspoons of baking soda.

After the freezer has defrosted entirely, you should wipe and dry all interior and exterior surfaces, then keep the doors open for at least 24 hours to let any leftover moisture escape. The growth of mould and mildew requires very little moisture to begin. Be sure to remove the evaporator pan's accumulated debris and wash it well before replacing it.

  6. Protect your floors
A crucial part of any fridge transfer is understanding how to move the fridge without damaging the floor. Your fridge could have wheels, in which case all you have to do is carefully roll it away from its position. You'll need to exercise a bit more caution if your refrigerator doesn't have wheels. The sharp surfaces below your fridge will scratch the ground if you shuffle it over it. Instead, tilt the refrigerator backwards and place a sheet or a sizable piece of cardboard under it. You can then easily create the ideal floor protection by simply rocking the refrigerator the other direction and sliding the sheet underneath the opposite portion of the appliance.

  7. Move your fridge carefully and slowly
One of the most crucial aspects in understanding how to transfer a refrigerator is the transit procedure. You must take care to move your refrigerator gently and cautiously while it is in transportation. To safeguard the internal mechanisms, keep in mind that refrigerators should always be positioned upright. Therefore, you should avoid driving too quickly through intersections or over speed bumps to avoid tipping your refrigerator. The saying "slow and steady wins the race" is certainly true when relocating a refrigerator.

Finally, once you have moved your refrigerator to its new location, you should wait at least three hours before turning it on to ensure that the internal mechanics and fluids have settled appropriately.

While you wait, you may put everything back where they belong on the racks and in the cabinets.

The time has come to plug in the refrigerator and start the chilling process. There is a window of time between two hours and a full day during which your refrigerator will cool to its optimum temperature. Food spoiling and bacterial development can be avoided by not opening the fridge until it has cooled to an appropriate temperature.
