How do I Clean a Shower Screen?

Dirty shower glass can make your bathroom look untidy and unkempt. Hard water and soap create tough murky stains on the glass that are difficult to clean. But there are many ways to remove soap scum and cloudiness from your shower screens.

Thankfully, you don’t have to rush out and buy a lot of expensive bathroom cleaning supplies. You can use many products that you likely already have in your home. Things like white vinegar, lemon juice, lemon oil, baking soda and toothpaste can get rid of these foggy marks effectively.

Below we’ve put together a list of simple and quick shower glass cleaning techniques. But before you get started, you’ll need the following pieces of equipment.

  •          Spray bottle
  •          Sponge
  •          Squeegee
  •          Soft bristle brush or toothbrush
  •          Paper towel or microfiber cloth

Once you’ve gathered your cleaning supplies, prepare the shower screen. Start by rinsing it with warm water. Wipe it using the squeegee and then dry it with paper towel or the microfiber cloth.

Now you’re ready to try these super simple techniques.

Techniques to clean shower screens

Lemon juice

Pour some drops of lemon juice onto a sponge and gently rub over the glass. Leave the lemon juice for a couple of minutes for better results. You can also mix the lemon juice with some warm water.

After a few minutes, rinse the area with warm water or a mix of warm water and white vinegar. Then dry the glass using a paper towel or microfiber cloth to get the surface sparkling.

For any spots of rust on metal shower door frames, make a paste with lemon juice and salt and spread that on the rust. Let it sit for a few minutes before rubbing it away. The rust should lift away with the paste.

White vinegar

White vinegar is a handy cleaner for all manner of things, including glass. Fill an empty spray bottle with vinegar, or a mix of vinegar and water. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice for a clean scent.

When your solution is ready, spray it on the shower glass and leave it for a few minutes. Then wipe it with a sponge or soft bristle brush and some warm water. If it is still not cleaned properly, apply it once again and rinse with warm water.

Don’t forget to remove the water with a dry cloth or using a squeegee.

Baking soda

For tougher stains, baking soda is the best solution.

Mix a small portion of baking soda with some water to make a thick paste. Gently apply this paste to the glass with a sponge or soft bristle brush. Focus on any stains around door hinges, which can be tougher to clean.

Rinse the paste off with warm water. Buff the glass with paper towel or a cloth to get it shining.

Toothpaste

If you don’t want to make a baking soda paste, then toothpaste will do in a pinch. Choose cheap white toothpaste.

Put some on a sponge and gently rub onto the shower glass. Rinse it off with warm water. Your shower should now be sparkling and smelling minty fresh.

Fabric softener

Add one cup of fabric softener to some warm water. Dampen a sponge with this solution and rub it over the shower glass. Rinse the glass with warm water. Dry the glass with a paper towel or microfiber cloth.

Lemon oil

Add some lemon oil to some warm water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the glass. Wipe with a microfiber cloth and your shower screens will look sparkling new.

However, do not use this too frequently as it can affect the condition of the glass. Try not to use this method more than every two weeks.

When to clean shower glass

Now you know some easy ways to clean your shower glass, how often should you do it?

Daily: After a shower, wipe the glass down with a cloth or a squeegee to minimise streaks and soap scum build up. Leave the shower door open to allow air to circulate around.

Weekly: Clean the shower glass at least once per week using one of the techniques above. Make sure to thoroughly rinse and dry the glass afterwards.

Monthly: Deep clean your entire shower, paying attention to the corners of the shower stall and the hinges of the shower door.

Why is it important to clean your shower screens?

No one really likes to clean, but simple home maintenance tasks like regularly cleaning your bathroom are important for a number of reasons. Here are just a couple for why you should regularly clean your shower glass:
  • Soap scum will quickly build up and make them look dirty, which makes the overall bathroom look dirty.
  • If left for a long time, soap scum and the like can become almost permanent. Regular cleaning stops you having to spend a lot of money to get it professionally removed.
  • Soap scum build-up can negatively affect the glass and it may not last as long as it could. The hinges and runners can also suffer if not cleaned regularly.

Cleaning your glass shower door should be a regular and quick chore. It doesn’t need to take a lot of time or money, just a little elbow grease. Also, have a look on our another blog on "EcoFriendly Bathroom Renovation"
